The Birdhouse app

The answer to “Is Mum OK?”, at a glance

Open the app and the first thing you see is how she is right now. Everything else — today’s activity, the family, the sensors — is one tap away.

  • One clear status for each home

Each home has a card with one big answer: All good, No activity for 3 hours, the latest alert, SOS, or Hub offline — plus when and where she last moved.

  • Today compared with a usual day

Today’s activity, hour by hour, next to what is usual for her — so a slow morning stands out.

  • Share with family and carers

Invite family as Owner, Manager or Viewer, approve requests to join, and invite a care agency when you want professional support.

  • Set up in a few minutes

Scan the QR code on the hub to add it, then pair each sensor and choose the room it’s in.

  • Your data, your choice

Download your data, turn off the AI assistant or delete your account from Settings › Your data.

Alerts

The right alert, to the right people, the way they want it

When something needs attention, Birdhouse tells everyone who looks after the home — and each person decides how they hear about it.

  • iPhone, Telegram or email

Push notifications on iPhone are Time Sensitive, with a different tone for urgent alerts, warnings and other updates. Alerts can also come by Telegram and email.

  • Only what matters to you

Each person chooses their channels and the lowest level they want to hear about: info, warning or urgent.

  • Quiet hours

Choose hours when you don’t want to be disturbed. Urgent alerts and SOS always come through.

  • Escalation until someone responds

If nobody acknowledges an urgent alert (an SOS: within 5 minutes), Birdhouse sends it again to everyone and to on-call: the home's care agency, and the Birdhouse team for homes with a Birdhouse monitoring plan.

  • Acknowledge from the app

One person acknowledges the alert and everyone else sees who is handling it, so nobody is left wondering.

SOS always goes out

A press of the SOS button alerts everyone with access to the home immediately, at any hour, whatever their settings.

Birdhouse alerts people: family, your care agency and, with a Birdhouse monitoring plan, the Birdhouse team. It is not an emergency service and never calls 995 for you. In a life-threatening emergency, call 995.

Dynamic monitoring

Rules that fit each home, not one fixed threshold

Every home and every routine is different. Birdhouse watches with simple rules you can read and change, set for each home and each room.

  1. 1

Suggested when you place a sensor

Put a sensor in the bedroom, the bathroom or by the front door, and Birdhouse suggests the rules that make sense for that room.

  2. 2

    Adjust them in plain language

Each rule reads like a sentence. Tap the coloured words to change the room, the times, the days or how long.

  3. 3

    Or just ask

Tell the assistant “Tell me if Mum isn’t up by 9”. It drafts the rule, explains what it will do, and saves it only when you confirm.

Set up a rule by asking

Birdhouse checks every rule every minute. Everyone with access can see the rules for a home; the owner and managers can change them or switch them off.

iPhone widgets

Check in from your home screen

Birdhouse widgets put her status on your iPhone’s home screen and Lock Screen, so you can check in without opening the app.

  • Small, medium and large

Status and last activity; today’s activity hour by hour against a usual day; or every home you look after, most urgent first.

  • On the Lock Screen too

A compact status right under the clock, for a quick look before you unlock.

  • The latest alert

When an alert is open, the widget shows it instead of “All good”.

Widgets refresh regularly, at times your iPhone decides, so they are for checking in. Alerts that need attention arrive straight away as push notifications.

Widgets come with the iPhone app, coming soon to the App Store.

Insights

Understand the day, not just the alerts

Movement tells a story. Birdhouse turns it into charts and plain words you can read in seconds.

  • Daily timeline

Which rooms she used and when, time out of the home, and quiet periods such as sleep.

  • Patterns over days and weeks

Heatmaps of activity by hour across days, and how much each room is used, show how routines change.

  • Today vs usual

Compare today with recent days, for the whole home or room by room.

  • AI insights in plain language

Short summaries that point out what is different, written for families, not analysts.

  • Daily and weekly reports

A summary with a chart by Telegram or email, so the whole family is on the same page.

AI assistant

Ask about the home in your own words

The Birdhouse assistant answers questions like “How did Mum sleep?” in the app or on Telegram.

Birdhouse assistant

  • In the app or on Telegram

Families chat with @BirdhouseHomeBot on Telegram or use the assistant in the app. Care agencies have their own bot for their staff.

  • Only the homes you can see

The assistant can only see the homes you have access to — never anyone else’s.

  • It asks first

Before your first question, it asks for your consent to send the information it needs to OpenAI to answer. You can turn it off at any time.

Private by design

Birdhouse staff can’t see a family’s activity unless the family has a monitoring plan or grants support access for a few days. Every staff view is logged and visible to the family.

No cameras, no microphones, no wearables — only signs of movement, doors and the SOS button.

Validated in real emergencies

During our 6-month paid pilot with New Hope Community Services, some care receivers experienced a medical emergency and were able to call for help themselves. In each case, Birdhouse independently detected and confirmed the unusual inactivity within 12–24 hours — confirming that, had they been unable to call for help, Birdhouse would have flagged it to their caregivers.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Birdhouse.

What is Birdhouse?

Birdhouse is an AI-powered monitoring system for seniors living alone. It uses discreet motion sensors to learn a senior's daily routine and automatically alerts family caregivers and Active Ageing Centres when unusual inactivity is detected, so help can arrive early.

How does Birdhouse work?

A small Zigbee motion sensor detects everyday movement at home and sends activity data to a hub. Birdhouse compares the day with the senior's usual pattern and with the alert rules set for the home, and sends an alert (in the app, on Telegram or by email) when expected activity is missing, such as no movement in the morning.

What happens when a senior presses the SOS button?

The alert goes out instantly, at any hour: the caregiver is notified immediately, along with the Active Ageing Centre if the centre is enrolled. During business hours, the Birdhouse team also calls the senior to check on them and helps coordinate next steps. Birdhouse is not an emergency response service — in a life-threatening emergency, call 995.

Does Birdhouse use cameras? Is it private?

No. Birdhouse uses no cameras, no audio or video recording and no heat mapping — and no wearables. It only tracks anonymous signs of movement, which are encrypted and protected with role-based access. The prototype deliberately left out a camera because the seniors interviewed by the team wanted privacy.

How much does Birdhouse cost?

Birdhouse is a simple monthly subscription with no separate hardware fee. The Basic plan is S$25/month and includes a hub and 1 motion sensor. The Essential plan is S$30/month and adds a door sensor and an SOS/panic button. Additional sensors are +S$5/month each.

Who is Birdhouse for?

Birdhouse is built for seniors living alone, their families and caregivers, and for Active Ageing Centres (AACs) and community service teams who need to keep watch over many seniors at once.

Do seniors need to change their daily routine or charge anything?

No. Birdhouse is non-intrusive and low-maintenance. Seniors do not need to wear a device, press buttons or change their behaviour, and the sensors run on long-life batteries.

What devices does Birdhouse include?

Birdhouse includes a hub that connects your sensors to the cloud, one or more motion sensors that detect activity, an optional door sensor for home-presence detection, and an optional SOS/panic button that raises an immediate alert to your caregivers when pressed. You can add more sensors at any time for S$5/month each.

Is there a Birdhouse app?

Yes. The Birdhouse app shows each home’s status, today’s activity compared with a usual day, alerts, alert rules and the people who share the home. It is available now as a web app at app.birdhouse.sg/app, and the iPhone app, with home-screen and Lock Screen widgets, is coming soon to the App Store.

How do I choose which alerts I get?

Each person chooses their own channels (iPhone notifications, Telegram or email), the lowest alert level they want (info, warning or urgent) and quiet hours, in the app under Settings. Urgent alerts and SOS presses always come through, and if nobody acknowledges an urgent alert, Birdhouse sends it again and brings in on-call: your care agency, or the Birdhouse team with a Birdhouse monitoring plan.

Can I change what Birdhouse watches for?

Yes. When a sensor is placed in a room, Birdhouse suggests rules for it — for example, no movement in the living room for 2 hours during the day, or a long time in the bathroom with no movement elsewhere. The home’s owner or managers can change them in the app as plain sentences, or ask the assistant (“Tell me if Mum isn’t up by 9”), which drafts the rule and saves it only after you confirm.

Do the iPhone widgets update in real time?

No. Widgets refresh regularly, but your iPhone decides exactly when, so they are best for a quick check. Alerts that need attention arrive straight away as push notifications, Telegram messages or email.

Where is Birdhouse available, and is it proven?

Birdhouse is based in Singapore and has run real-world pilots with care partners including Jia Ying and Chong Hua Tong Active Ageing Centres and a 6-month paid pilot with New Hope Community Services — 16+ homes and 380,000+ check-ins in total. During the New Hope pilot, Birdhouse independently detected and confirmed inactivity linked to real medical emergencies. It was one of the winning projects at Build for Good 2024 and was featured by The Straits Times.
